In 1998 Alan Lorence partnered with Impulse (developers of Imagine 3D software) to develop "Illusion", a fast and easy-to-use particle effects application. In 2002 Impulse decided to leave the consumer software business, and Alan obtained exclusive rights to continue development of Illusion.

In June 2002 Alan formed wondertouch, LLC, renamed Illusion "particleIllusion", and started work on particleIllusion 3.0.
